U.S. Defense Secretary Ash Carter has said that the U.S. will send 560 more troops to Iraq to fight ISIL.
Carter made the announcement during his visit to the country. He said the troops will help establish a newly retaken air base as a staging hub in the battle to recapture Mosul, a city 250 miles from the Iraqi capital.
The latest deployment brings the total number of U.S. troops in Iraq to more than 4,600. Carter also met with his Iraqi counterpart Khaled al-Obeidi and congratulated the Iraqi Security Forces on their success in pushing back ISIL across regions.
